THEOPNEUSTOS (θεόπνευστος): GOD-BREATHED
Theopneustos, meaning “God-breathed,” describes a state of complete surrender within Roosevelt’s practice. These works synthesize all aspects of her painting language, textured earth, salvaged materials, accumulated gesture, into transformational pieces shaped by openness rather than control.
Inspired by people, myth, poetry, music, and love, the paintings are deeply relational. They ask for surrender from both maker and viewer, allowing something to move through the work that exceeds individual intention. The paintings breathe. And in sustained attention, the viewer may feel themselves breathing differently too.
